We are a group of collectors interested in studying minerals in their natural unmodified state, which also includes learning about where and how they are found, how they were formed in the ground, and how they can be extracted from the rocks that shelter and conceal them. Our members range from "pepple pups" just starting their collections to experienced amateur mineralogists whose breadth of knowledge serves as the backbone of the Study Section's resources. We are also backed by the library which contains a large and varied collection of mineral-related books, magazines, and articles available for study and research. Our members have large and varied collections, some of which are usually on exhibit at the annual Show. Some members specialize in "micromounts," very small specimens best seen under a microscope. Others collect larger sizes of specimens or specialize in particular minerals or locations. Among our members can be found extensive collections of Texas, Arkansas, Colorado, and Mexican minerals, and minerals from Missouri and Illinois to name a few. There are also collections of phosphate minerals, stilbite and other zeolites, rhodochrosite, and fluorite. At our meetings there always is time for show and tell, when members can bring out specimens they acquired recently through purchase or field trip. Once a year the Section has an auction with donations from members and local dealers to raise funds for the Section. This auction is a lively affair, and features good specimens at fair prices. Talks at the meetings are usually given by the members, who speak on interesting mineral localities, mineral species or groups, or who discuss recent field trips or shows. Every year after the Tucson Show in February, we gather to hear the tales of those lucky enough to have gone to this largest of all mineral shows. The Mineral Section welcomes new members and provides a learning environment for people interested in expanding their knowledge about the vast world of natural crystals. INTERESTING
