March 2005 Fossil Field Trip

a.k.a. “Sponge Fest”

Where did we go?

Mineral Wells and Jacksboro, Texas

We also scoured the roadsides in Palo Pinto and Jack Counties.

Dr. Neal Immega is our resident paleontologist and field trip leader.

Without him we’d be staring at our fossils still scratching our heads. Also, we would never have learned to appreciate the power in the lowly fossilized sponge.

One thing we didn’t run out of were crinoid stems. Some of us turned the hollow stems into necklace beads. This is not a new invention but one that came from the Native Americans.

In the dump in Mineral Wells, a few people found trilobites.

The following are pictures of some of our members doing what they do best, having fun and getting dirty.
