HGMS MISSION STATEMENT

The HGMS Gem, Jewelry, Mineral, and Fossil Show seeks to raise awareness of Earth Science Education activities in the Houston area and the importance of Earth Science Education in general.

Further objectives include promoting community awareness of the HGMS' year-round activities such as field trips, lapidary and fossil cleaning workshops, educational classes, social dinners, auctions, meetings of the Lapidary, Silversmithing, Faceting, Mineral, and Paleontology (fossil) special-interest groups and other facilities and events that are available to our membership. The Show also increases club membership, thereby adding to our pool of knowledge and experience, and funds the club's year-round nonprofit activities.

Club exhibits during the Show seek to fulfill these objectives by teaching and demonstrating the lapidary and faceting arts and by providing information and identification of minerals, fossils, and gemstones. Other nonprofit clubs and organizations may also be present to educate and inform about their respective fields.

The first day of the show (Friday) is designated Kid's Day and features field trips from elementary and middle schools from the metropolitan Houston area as well as from surrounding suburbs. Educational lessons during the show are TEKS-based and are organized into age-specific, earth science lesson plans that can be taken back to the classroom for further learning.
