Neal Immega:
Meteorites and Meteor Wrongs

Since there is no time during the meeting, I will be having a workshop starting at
6 p.m.to identify meteorites including the etching step to show Widmanstatten lines. If you want help, bring your stuff in. I will teach everyone there how to practically identify meteorites. I am set up for you to grind and polish your meteorite for the etching step.

For the program, please bring in your meteorites (including all the high priced ones I sold you from the Cross collection). I also need meteor-wrongs including some steel mill slag. A tektite would be nice also. Bill M. - please bring one of your big ones. Fred B. - please bring one of your etched specimens. Ray K. - got any Pallesites (olivine and iron)?

This program will be hands-on, and you WILL learn because you will do the work.
This premeeting class will be in the classroom and not the lecture hall because we need to use the grinder, sander, and buff for the polishing. Bring a sewing needle on a 2-foot long thread, and I will show you how to make it into a super sensitive iron/magnetite detector. Come any time between 6 and 7:30.

In honour of the 2012 Tucson Gem and Mineral Show theme “Minerals of Arizona,” the Mineral Section is hosting its own show and tell presentation featuring specimens from the collections of Society members that were found in the Grand Canyon State. Members who bring in specimens can talk about how they obtained their prized possessions and give insight into collecting Arizona items of your very own.  This presentation promises to be very laid back, yet informative and (hopefully) lots of fun. As always, the meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. and refreshments will be provided.
